So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. After three months in countries without woodpeckers, it was nice to find these Bennett’s Woodpeckers. The very first bird I saw when we entered Kruger was this Burchell’s Coucal.

We had not been expecting to see a Banded Woodpecker and there we had one right in front of us. It was clear from the tree trunk that the Banded Woodpecker most likely stopped by this tree on a regular basis to look for food. However, I do have some photographs of the Banded Woodpecker ! Although the tide was in we were still able to observe several species of shorebird on Pulau Sekudu. There were Grey Plover , Common Sandpiper , Whimbrel , Pacific Golden Plover and Bar-tailed Godwit. In fact the island was not busy in any area, especially if you were on foot.

Zebra Doves , Tree Sparrows , Pacific Swallows , Pink-necked Pigeons , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Asian Koel , Spotted Dove , Rock Dove , Red Junglefowl , Oriental White Eyes and Black-naped Orioles were soon on our list. This area was good during our visits over the three weeks for Laced Woodpeckers and Common Flamebacks. Monk Parakeet.

Javan Mynas , Olive-backed Sunbirds , Spotted Doves , Rock Doves , Zebra Doves , Common Tailorbirds , Blue-tailed Bee-eaters , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Pink-necked Green Pigeons , House Sparrows and Black-naped Orioles were in that location. The dense trees close to the river offered Collared Kingfishers and Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker.

Zebra-tailed Lizards, Splotch-sided Lizards, Orange-bellied Skinks and Desert Iguanas are quite common in this area, so the American Kestrels were too. In some short hikes around the area, Black-throated Sparrows, California Quail, Harris Hawks, Gila Woodpeckers , and Greater Roadrunners were quite abundant.

Brown-capped Flycatcher and Gila Woodpecker are southeastern birds, but not that tough to find outside the area. For example, we ran into a fleet of fascinating lizards such as Ornate Tree Lizard , Sonoran Racerunner , and Zebra-tailed Lizard. Greater Roadrunners are always a pleasure to spy, but also relatively easy to come by.

The path along the right (east) bank of the river leads along a cycle path with Asian Koels , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Laced Woodpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins all likely. Forest species are likely to include the Banded Woodpecker and Black Drongo. From the bridge here you will find herons, egrets and kingfishers.

The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Sniffing us.
