Continuing with the topic of singing, apparently, Zebra Doves are highly valued for their singing, particularly in parts of Southern Thailand. The importance of the Zebra Doves ‘ singing is also implied in the Javanese language – apparently, “Zebra Dove” is a Javanese metaphor for a particular vocal type ( source ).

The Woodpeckers of New York City

Disbelief probably seems like the proper response to the idea that there are woodpeckers in New York City. After all, woodpeckers peck on trees, not skyscrapers. But even birders might be surprised to learn that eight species of woodpecker have graced New York City’s five boroughs with their presence!

The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Sniffing us.

In any case, I wonder whether the female – not quite as colorful as the male, see below – also qualifies as an “aesthetically valuable urban bird species” The third pigeon species around here is the Zebra Dove. When Sunda Pygmy Woodpeckers want to enjoy a day out on the beach, they also come to Tanjung Aru.

We also have the occasional visit from Long-tailed Finch and Zebra Finch and these two species are easily found around the Broome area. They varied in size from the large Oriental Pied Hornbill to the tiny Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker and many birds in between! Unlike many other birds in Singapore these birds were almost familiar!
