Johann Georg Wagner has seven birds named after him, from a chachalaca to a woodpecker, but would he have found more if hadn’t accidentally shot himself while out collecting? Wagner wasn’t the only one to have died from gunshot wounds.

The trails that wound through woods and across meadows were wonderful and the lake, though small, is a beauty, and the entire park is just chock full of nice landscapes. Desi was happy to pick up rocks and sticks to hand to me and Daisy identified a Red-bellied Woodpecker by its coughing call.

After the castle we wound our way through the Black Forest where we were able to watch a pair of Eurasian Three-toed Woodpeckers foraged a few feet in front of us. Now, I’ve read around on this site enough to know that your very own Corey believes a certain European woodpecker species is likely just a myth to frustrate Americans.
