I managed to see my first Loggerhead Turtle within the mangroves, an unfortunate soul that became trapped within the maze of roots during an exceptionally high tide and lost its life. I’ll spare you the pictures of the dead sea turtle and instead share something a little brighter. Rufous Crab-Hawk. Maybe another time.

Turtle nesting sign The walk south along Cable Beach from the Surf Club to Gantheaume Point is approximately 6 kilometres each way. We have yet to observe another shorebird species that is so keen to find shade!

Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle. Were there going to be any birds?

What is now recreated of the lake where the god Apollo was married and where the Argonauts built their kingdom is officially called the Reservoirs of the former Lake Karla. It was an odd feeling to be back at the “former lake” which I birded in 2019, before the pandemic.

August is possibly the best month there, because you gradually observe the rise and fall of numbers of various migrating species, which use it as a stopover site to fatten up ahead of the long hauls further south. Also, a European Roller and a Turtle Dove made their appearances, too.

We were looking for turtle tracks, but my eyes were drawn to the dozens and dozens of birds feeding and resting as the sun brightened the sky. Looking for turtle tracks (but also birds and shells). Allen’s turtle transect was 2.5 No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species.

We encountered one crossing the road in 2012, but with the cooler weather this year there was less turtle activity. Eastern Long-necked Turtle. Walking north I soon encountered a fresh Flatback Turtle nest from the previous night’s high tide and that should hatch out in about 2 months all going well. The nests have been monitored for some years now so there is now some baseline data on how often the Flatback Turtles nest on Cable Beach and how successful they are.

Everyone was slamming on their brakes on a major road and as I crept around the mayhem I saw the reason: a turtle of some kind. Four people emerged from the cars and were practically tripping over one another trying to get to the turtle to carry him to safety. One small act of kindness perhaps, but for the turtle a life-saving one.
