To avoid writing a non-woke post I planned to mention scientific names only.

Ivy and I visited a new hiking trail in hopes of decent birding, but got completely skunked warbler-wise. Why is it, then, that I had such a tough time finding one this weekend? Luckily, I crossed paths with a Common Yellowthroat in full “witchity-witchity&# later in the weekend!

The scent of skunk that perfumed one portion of the path at Pelham Bay Park seemed to foretell a skunking for us. Three species of owl in one park in the Bronx in one morning! Yeah, that must be what happened… Anyway, we made our way back to our original search area and, sure enough, the Barred Owl was unmissable.

After our slow start to the day we were amazed when, while waiting for Clay’s flat tire to be repaired, Brian counted up our list and realized we had tallied 94 species. Our best birds in the marshes, however, were two species of shorebird. We were also pleased at having broken the 100-species mark.
