This is The Seychelles. They are all recognisable from their families in Africa and are simply referred to by prefixing with “Seychelles” With most species being the only representative of their family, it made identification easy. There were a few other Indian Ocean specialities to bulk up my Seychelles list.

Boulders Beach, a popular spot in Cape Town, is the place to see the species, and if the mood takes, swim with them. I didn’t swim, but I may next time.

In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia.

Today the species is secure on a large number of islands and reserves. Both species had undergone massive declines since the arrival of humans and where in a perilous position in the 1970s. Both species were pushed to the brink but pulled back just in the nick of time. It worked, and the translocated birds were soon breeding.
