My girlfriend (and later fiancée) Katherine and I had planned an eight-day vacation to the Bay Area, mostly to visit her sister in inland Napa County, but also to see as much of San Francisco as we could. I pulled out my phone and searched for “San Francisco” and “fire”, expecting to find news of some conflagration nearby in the city.

While numbers were low, our first migratory Baird’s Sandpipers and Wilson’s Phalaropes had arrived from their breeding grounds up north, right on time. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, and will not know until fall if their drought will also give way this year. Still, there were a few good signs.

Their beautiful blue-gray can really pop in the right light. We have at least 3 nesting locations here in San Francisco and that number seems to be climbing slowly. They share our world without too much complaint, adapting to our cities and towns when they can. They are good watchers. They know the rhythms of gophers.

Birds Worth The Trip

The Cerro de Punhuato (poon-WA-toe) nature reserve, officially denominated a biological garden, is right on the northeastern edge of Morelia’s urban zone. Best of all, you can fly here direct from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Instead, I visited a local site for my first time this year.
