Turtle Bay’s Nesting Bald Eagles Patriot and Liberty

Since 2006 a pair of Bald Eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) nesting at Turtle Bay in Redding California have successfully raised a dozen eaglets! Not to disappoint, Patriot flies in a fresh fish from the Sacramento River. This year when the pair returned to Turtle Bay, they decided to build a new nest in an adjacent tree.

The American White Pelican Scoops Up Fish As It Swims

I was lucky enough to catch this photo of an adult in flight at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge back in February showing the horn and their distinctive black and white plumage. Then they raise their heads up to swallow their catch. Unlike the Brown Pelican, the American White Pelican scoops up fish while swimming.

Our Audubon Chapter Campout at Lassen Volcanic National Park

One of the best things about our annual Lassen Park campout is that we get to see several species of birds that are rarely, if ever, seen in the Sacramento Valley. Near Summit Lake we have been able to witness Williamson’s Sapsuckers ( Sphyrapicus thyroideus ) raising their young in a snag near the campground.

Gadwall Courtship Displays

I spent a few hours in the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge blind #1 last weekend and filmed the following video of Gadwalls ( Anus strepera ) engaged in courtship displays. Then jerks head up quickly with breast still low, raising a small fountain of water. Almost always followed by Down-Up Display. Down-Up Display.
