The Pittas of Sepilok

Unfortunately, the Hooded Pitta is a frequent victim of collisions with buildings, for example in Singapore ( source ). Sadly, according to the HBW, this pitta is also frequently caught and sold in the cage bird trade in Indonesia despite having protected status.

The 28 odd species of this genus are found in the Sunda (the islands of Indonesia, Malaysia and the southern bit of Thailand) and the Philippines, and are named for the inescapable (in this region anyway) Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, he of the founding of Singapore fame. Not, I should add, a particularly big one.

Birding Sepilok, Borneo (Part 2)

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates. Drongos feed more effectively when in such flocks, so the benefits go both ways.

Willie Creek

Broome’s famous Cable Beach, named after the telegraph undersea cable that was laid in 1889 to enable communication with England via Singapore, stretches about 23 kilometres-14 miles. The first creek to the north is Willie Creek and we often visit it on the south side when we monitor the breeding pairs of Pied Oystercatchers.
