A good year for Zebra Finch

This year has been different as we have a new visitor-the Zebra Finch. The last time we saw Zebra Finch visit our garden was a pair in 2004 and then suddenly in April this year they appeared in large numbers all around Broome’s coastline and at the Poo Ponds. I went out to sit on the lawn and take some photographs.

Close to Home

Black-and-white Warblers are usually dapper little birds, with their head-to-tail zebra stripes. And this turtle must be someone’s escaped pet, since Painted Turtles should not be found in the wild much beyond the southern U.S. But this one had just bathed, and had not yet combed its hair.

It is listed as Near Threatened, partly due to the usual occurrence of illegal trade for the pet market. In any case, I wonder whether the female – not quite as colorful as the male, see below – also qualifies as an “aesthetically valuable urban bird species” The third pigeon species around here is the Zebra Dove.

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Lower Peirce Reservoir-Singapore

We had learnt from signs over the days we had been in Singapore that they have a problem with people dumping unwanted pets and we presume this to be the case in the reservoir. We were surprised that it had taken until this day to find Coconut Lorikeets. We were surprised to see a sign warning of sting rays in the reservoir!

In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets! This lioness remained hidden from these zebras in the long grass until she felt they were close enough for the charge. They are harmless to humans and their horns are used for wrestling other males for mating rights.
