This is all in a day’s work and a typical morning here at the Tambopata Research Center in the Madre de Dios district of Peru where, on behalf of the conservation agency Earthwatch Institute , I have come to volunteer for two weeks for the Tambopata Macaw Project. That’s right – birds eating clay. Wicked, right?

I also missed easy birds like Snowy Owl and Swainson’s Warbler. When I upped my goal to some insane stratospheric level in June, going back to find things like Lesser Prairie-Chicken (which I missed) became more problematic. The logistics for a big year can leave you in situations with surprising misses.
