Growing up in Namibia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka provided the perfect setting for this interest. My chance materialized in September this year when I spent a month volunteering at the “Vogelwarte Helgoland”, the bird observatory on the island that is part of the Institute of Avian Research.

I am thinking of a relatively stable/prosperous bird-paradise where one may be able to find a job in ecotourism or wildlife research… or, to begin with, as a resident environmental scientist / nature blogger in some wildlife lodge? Birdlife South Africa has previously done two of these types of trips before, previously called Flock to Sea – Namibia in 2013 and Flock to Nowhere in 2017, in partnership with MSC Cruises. These have been used by meteorologists, technicians, and researchers who spend about 13 months on the island at a time researching a variety of sciences.

Given the complexity of the research, the result feels like a bit of a letdown – “northern populations start migration earlier than southern populations, especially in autumn” The species name of the Chestnut-eared Bunting is fucata , from the Latin “fucare”, to paint red.

Of course Africa could not to be left out of the pink weekend so I have researched all African species whose official or alternative names include the word “pink”. Another southern African endemic, this species ranges widely across the dry grasslands of central South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Pink-throated Twinspot.

A different research says, from 2002 to 2011 the known populations of forest elephants declined by 62%. Of those range states, opposed were South Africa, Namibia and, not surprisingly, Zimbabwe. Even worse is the situation with Forest Elephants Loxodonta cyclotis of jungles of Central and West Africa. One may say so.

Leventis is a businessman from London involved in wildlife conservation in Africa, including the establishment of an avian research institute in Nigeria and an amateur photographer. Mills has a Masters in Conservation Biology at the University of Cape Town and works as a freelance bird guide, mostly with Birding Africa. Well, I have to agree.
