Sad End for Vagrant Swift, Happy Ending for Wrong-Way Pigeon

While the stray Needletail met a tragic demise, another long-distance traveler has escaped its brush with death. Yup, this one-year-old pigeon, who was released for a race near Sapporo, Japan, flew clear across the Pacific ! Dozens of birders were on hand and the horror happened before their very eyes. White’s Thrush or Scaly?

On a recent visit to Tokyo, Japan, I came across a beautiful bird that I took to be a White’s Thrush , Zoothera dauma. toratugumi , the northerly form of the migratory species that occurs in Japan should be the obvious choice, but by this logic, all such thrushes seen in Japan (apart from Amami Island) should be White’s.
