The word Trogon, from the Greek meaning “gnawer,” refers to their hooked, serrated bills used to eat large insects and fruit – as well as gnaw on the rotting wood of old woodpecker cavities to reuse as nesting sites.

It’s illegal, it disturbs birds, and if you do admit to doing this, you are only going to encourage others to make the same mistake. There were lots of Morning Duvs and Pilleated Woodpeckers out. No need to get defensive. Don’t even bring up using tapes on endangered species. “Hi. It was beautiful. What bird is this?”
