This summer Lisa raised three orphaned Common Ravens. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. We decided to raise them, and hoped they would wild up quickly if we followed the protocol for avoiding imprinting. She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl.

Mating pairs are faithful for life and share the tasks of raising the young. Illegal capture for the wild animal trade is an obvious peril for such a charismatic species, but this big blue bird is also hunted both for its meat and feathers. Another advantage to ballistic food transport is that the fruit seeds are protected from damage when they are swallowed whole. Other threats arise from illegal logging, hunting for bushmeat, and other body parts (feathers, beak, etc.) Of course, their own mother is not the only threat to Wreathed Hornbill individuals.

There seem to be so many that some days the negative stories just seem to pile up in my reader, species lost here, habitat destroyed there, poisoning, illegal persecution, the list can seem endless. It can be difficult not to feel impotent and under attack from all sides. This was a little win perhaps, but hopefully the first of many.

With assistance from the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) a boardwalk and nature centre have been established. Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . According to the World Bank, up to 80 percent of Ghana’s forests had been destroyed by illegal logging by 2008. Africa’s only rainforest canopy walkway in Kakum National Park. million hectares in 2007.
