The gamekeeper drives by, I wave my greetings but do not mention the jackals I am observing at the moment: this animal is not protected in Serbia and is allowed for killing year-round (one may say “hunting” instead, but I am having problems trying to spot the difference). All this happens less than a mile from the nearest houses.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. It is too early to show.

In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. Mammals Ethiopia Gelada' they are the most terrestrial primate after humans. This has resulted in their populations returning to natural levels and their fear of humans being curtailed.

This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Tianmashan bonus mammal: a Raccoon Dog – though it looks a lot like a raccoon, it is actually more closely related to foxes than to raccoons. And it does not even live in reeds. Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. If you see a flock of kestrels in southern Europe, then the chances are that they will be Lessers, for the Common Kestrel never flocks, though occasionally in summer you will see a family hunting together. The answer is likely to be a higher percentage of small mammals and birds than they take in the summer.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. .
