At least most of the resident species can still be seen right along the road, you just have to keep an eye out for cyclists and vehicles on their way up and down the volcano. This shimmering mega species is regular on Poas and, when feeding, is often joined by the Black Guan , an arboreal black turkey-like bird with a blue face.

Unfortunately for the hunters these were already all extinct, and with the introduction of cats, rats, stoats and the like the only upland game bird, the New Zealand Quail , was fast on the way out too. With a boost like that the species was well and truly here to stay. Indeed, 30,000 mallards were released across the entire nation.

Thus, birders like natural areas close to home with rare species, and perhaps some ducks. Note that diversity of species, total number of birds, and access, were less important.

The Moustached Kingfisher was known by only three samples– one female “collected” in the 1920’s, the other two females “collected” in the 1950’s, according to an Audubon Magazine article. The justification was ridiculously laughable: in order to further study the species. How its diet changed seasonally? How it raised its chicks?

Most likely, all individuals of a given species have very similar genes guiding very similar developmental processes, but produce different results because the plasticity itself is selected for. Changes in antipredatory behaviour in captivity have been proposed to explain the higher invasiveness of wild-caught exotic species.

you’d get to see the much larger samples of prepared specimens in the drawers. Among the gentry there seems not to have been much of a line between being a bird watcher and a bird hunter, and the home naturalist could certainly develop a nice private collection. Or get your own. Clearly, we need better software.

Read what you want about the origin of domestic cats; the genetic evidence is not properly sampled. This almost certainly can be argued to be true just on the basis of logic, because feral Cats are proficient hunters and are entirely out of ecological place. They are invasive species. Let me tell you this: They are.
