Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

Suspecting they still occurred, we went to considerable effort searching unsuccessfully for picathartes, our suspicions all but confirmed when several hunters I interviewed said they knew the bird and claimed they still existed. Falakhe’s Story

It took most of the rest of the day, but finally at around 5 we found the pack literally on the southern fenceline of the reserve, deep inside the hunting concession that made up the bottom of the park. Falakhe is still alive, as is the dominant male in his litter. We had to leave Fala to find the pack. I didn’t need to.
