Local people who unexpectedly end up with injured wildlife in their cars tend to beeline for the zoo; especially if they have no cell phone. The man arrived at the zoo with bloody puncture wounds up and down both arms. Puncture wounds require a current tetanus shot, and I was overdue. Evidently, it was not amused.

Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. Her deep wounds were filled with maggots. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

Predators and storms can wreak havoc and human intervention is sometimes needed for survival. Even if you do not see an obvious wound, cat or dog saliva, which is full of nasty bacteria, can still get into a bird’s eyes/orifices and will eventually kill the bird; it will just die more slowly and painfully. So: When do you intervene?

It also brings to mind the uncontested link between animal abuse and violent behavior toward fellow humans. Wounded birds were left to crawl away into the woods; sometimes, during breaks, children were encouraged to run across the field, scoop them up, and tear their heads off. This is baloney.
