Being vegan because you want to live as nonviolently as possible and you don't want to contribute to violence and you don't want to respond to violence with violence is admirable to some, though refusing to support the defense of sentient nonhumans when you probably would if they were humans bothers me. Not that I'm giving you a deadline.

Abby, I too get very upset by stories and images of what occurs every second of every day to nonhumans and humans alike. The purpose of my life is to be the best human being I can be and to leave this planet knowing I did what I could to make it a better place. Can you please share your spiritual beliefs or coping mechanisms?

question is important when it comes to adopting special needs animals, like Violet Rays, our rescue greyhound. She is one individual whose care could easily fund a small animal sanctuary for at least a year, or start untold TNR efforts, or provide clean water to thousands of people. Another "which is more important?"
