Highlights from Birding Costa Rica, 2019

Ruffs from Israel, the one in Costa Rica kind of looked like the top bird. Luck always plays a role for seeing these monster goshawks but so does looking for them in the right places. Mary and I were likewise successful with that memorable twitch, enjoying prolonged views of the pseudo yellowlegs in good light. Bird counts.

In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not. In a study in Israel, migrating Steppe Buzzard s were found to have much higher lice infestation rates than non-migratory Common Buzzards in the same region. Serves the bird right for not living close to European ornithologists.
