During our three weeks in Singapore we encountered many a family of Red Junglefowl- Gallus gallus in various locations. Often the rustling of leaves would lead us to Red Junglefowl , squirrels, water monitors or small lizards. Most family groups of Red Junglefowl included around three young birds being fed by the female.

It’s a fun game for New World birders to find equivalents to many of the Old World bird families that we are unfamiliar with, but there is no equivalent to turacos. They bounce around limbs like jays and scurry like squirrels. In fact, let’s just just go with “squirrel-jays”, because that’s pretty close.

The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. Both species seemed content to observe each other though. This young male Summer Tanager didn’t linger or waste time.

Normally, it would not be possible to walk here, but people were drawing a collective sigh of relief as two nuclear powers stood down and petty rules were more pliant than usual.

Along with more orangutans and diminutive Common Pygmy Squirrels, we also found a massive cobra one day! The river is a stronghold of the endangered Storm’s Stork , a stunning member of the family, and I saw at least one every day I was there. A side tributary. The birding was pretty ace too. This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers.

Quetzals on the roadside but to be honest, the overall birding was just as satisfying around Myriam’s; a small diner, cabins, and set of trails through nice high elevation forest run by a very friendly, gracious family. We watched Acorn Woodpeckers laugh and dive bomb a squirrel. These people feed birds.

There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. It is also a good location for observing otters, squirrels and monitors. We found a Common Sandpiper feeding among the rubbish, which sadly is a problem in Singapore just like the rest of the world.

We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. They don’t build nests and some like Great Horned Owls take over old hawk or squirrel nests. That is probably one of the adults.

There were numerous White-chested Emeralds around at the feeders also – a vivid Yellow Oriole hopped around a bit further off, and restless movement in the treetops further still was a Squirrel Cuckoo. A number of families exist on Trinidad but not Tobago. Most notably the family of New World Vultures.

I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. Over fifteen different butterflies frequent our yard now, but I’m certain there are more as I’m not that good with insects in general. Of course, various species of bats as well.

They are part of a family of New World Quail which includes Gambel’s, Mountain, Scaled and Montezuma Quail, as well as the Northern Bobwhite. The family stays very close to cover for several weeks, getting bolder as the young develop. The family group pictured below has been visiting my yard recently.
