There is also a family of Barn Owls on the premises, and I have briefly seen the largest of them (enormous!) In the area of Morelia, where I live, no parrots are to be found. But here, Olive-throated Parakeets and White-fronted Parrots are a constant presence in the early morning and late evening. flying by at night.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. They are great for apartment settings.

The family has about 37 species, but that includes several fulvettas – only 21 of the species have “parrotbill” in their names (and frankly, the bills of fulvettas do not look like those of parrots at all). At least until the next reorganization of the avian family tree. Never fails to startle them.

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.

It is usually an extremely secretive bird and only readily found at very first light when family parties emerge onto the tops of boulders and utter their strange, shrieking choruses. Keep looking and you might see some other members of this glittering, fast-paced family. Although more than one parrot and parakeet can forage in hedgerows, this long-tailed green bird is the most common. Take a walk by any hedgerow in Costa Rica and you’ll probably see a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. Crimson-fronted Parakeet.

Identifying White-eyes in Australia is easier than here in China, as the Silvereye is the only family member present in most parts of the country. The Red-rumped Parrot is a ground-feeding parrot – one of its other names is grass parrot. That sounds pretty cool. Maybe it is a younger bird.

It wasn’t long before I saw my first family of Superb Fairy-wrens as well as a very noisy Willie Wagtail. Also present were other parrots, including the gorgeous King Parrots , the dashing Galah and the Eastern Rosella. First was a family of fast-moving Silvereyes and a Spotted Pardalote. From here it is common to see Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots and Pink-necked Pigeons in the palm trees on the island, or perhaps a Blue-throated Bee-eater hawking from one of the large trees on the far side of the water.
