But there is one kind of tick that I genuinely do enjoy, and as I do more and more birding it becomes harder and harder to get; new families. Getting entirely new families is easy when you start birding. Sometimes you may even lose them, like the aforementioned woodswallows which are probably no longer a family.

While the HBW describes the bulbul family as “often rather plain”, I find them usually quite attractive, though in an understated way that may not appeal to the flashiness-seeking HBW authors. “Now the kangaroos are drinking from the pool” (Jen is from Australia). I am paralyzed just thinking about how to do it.

As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. It wasn’t long before I saw my first family of Superb Fairy-wrens as well as a very noisy Willie Wagtail. First was a family of fast-moving Silvereyes and a Spotted Pardalote.

Western Grey Kangaroo. Water on the far side of Lake Indoon.
