Violation of the law would be punishable by substantial fines, plus the cat owners would be required to perform community service at a local wildlife rehabilitation facility. Summer is high season.

This past January, however, my experience was even better. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. The same can be said, to a lesser extent, for the shorebirds, New World sparrows, warblers, and many other families. Four eyes are better than two.

And it looks even better in my hands while I dream about a visit to regions of Brazil I had scarcely heard of before being provided with a review copy of the first volume of the Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil.* Each family of birds has a short introductory paragraph and most genera get a sentence or two of description.

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)). Purple Roller. Some Red-billed Oxpeckers on some big thing.

Snowcap and White-tipped Sicklebill – Choice hummingbirds in a speciose, fantastic family of birds. One of those occasions was by invitation from the San Vito Birding Club , a memorable experience I will cover in another blog post. We saw both of these beauties at known sites near the edge of Braulio Carrillo National Park.
