Astounding because she picked up birding before she could speak and surprising because this ability was definitely not inherited from anyone in my family, myself included. I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. I know from experience how accessible Dennis is, last year he helped me identify a damselfly I photographed in Costa Rica (Argia anceps, no common name). Although designed as a field guide, it is a hefty book, 376 pages long, covering 336 species. Many species are dimorphic, with females looking different from males.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. Southern Cassowary with chicks by Duncan Wright Carlos Sanchez was particularly appreciative of a new bird for him in Florida. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.

After a brief look at a map, my rough guesstimate is that the territory from Guatemala and Belize south to the Darien gap is roughly equal to New England, or Florida and the eastern parts of Georgia and the Carolinas north to the Virginia line. Fewer tanagers : Many more member of this technicolor family occur in Costa Rica.
