Mt Bruce, since you ask, is the Department of Conservation’s premier endangered bird breeding centre. The centre now encompasses native bush into which some of these endangered species have been released. (It And on this visit, we were there in time to see feeding for the kiwi chicks the centre was raising.

Considerable efforts are also being made to save the Orange-fronted Parakeets after their population crashed from 700 to less than 200 between 1999 and 2000 (due to bad rat plagues caused by beech masting).

Despite birding in shattered forests with the constant background whine of chainsaws, the birding is phenomenal, with an incredible diversity and volume of rare and endangered species. Whether permits being issued are for selective harvesting or not, what is undeniable is that these reserves are being clear-felled.
