FWS evidently objected to this proposal, noting the proximity to the refuge and the area’s importance as a migratory corridor for many species of birds. A handful of endangered species have been observed at the refuge (or in the vicinity) as well. There are nesting Bald Eagles in the area as well. That is a tougher argument.

I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Black-backed Woodpeckers are non-migratory, although there have been documented intermittent irruptions of the species outside their normal range. Click on photos for full sized images.

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. Blue-moustached Bee-eater is rainforest species occurring in just a few scattered sites in Ghana, it was previously considered a subspecies of Blue-headed Bee-eater.

Thanks to the Endangered Species Act and a successful reintroduction program in which NWF played a major role, the wolf is thriving again in the Yellowstone and Great Lakes areas. Amazing what these calendars can contain.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. Since its rediscovery in 1997, this species has been found at a number of new locations, several of which appear to hold significant populations.
