What do you say when someone tells you they will be spending the summer in the Lower Michigan Peninsula? Recently it has also been documented as breeding in Wisconsin, Ontario, and the Upper Michigan Peninsula, but those birds are few and not always accessible. This happened to me recently on a birding trip, with somewhat egg-on-the-face results. We were driving up to northwestern Michigan from our homes in Ohio (me) and West ByGod Virginia (Geoff) in search of a bird species that would be a lifer for both of us: the Bohemian Waxwing. I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. To remedy this, I visited the Animal Diversity Web site at the University of Michigan. I’m sure there were a lot of insects in range of my eyeballs, hiding behind leaves or camouflaged against bark as insects are wont to do.
