Most interesting for me was the mental lock most people have that we vegans are always looking to break or find the key to: Why do good people who understand what happens to animals for unnecessary products such as “steak” or eggs, continue to consume such things? He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal.

There was no meaningful discussion about our inefficient use of resources (grain and water) in the feeding of animals to kill to feed people. And the wife says that one thing the family does is eat less meat and eggs (and they raise the animals on their land), but even that is glossed over. But they dismiss food.

From Hiro, we learn how Northern Pygmy Owls are “rule breakers,” not incubating eggs till all are hatched and then raising owlets that mature at the same rate even though the eggs were laid asynchronously (as most owl eggs are). They are also hunted. Jennifer Ackerman is one of my favorite bird authors.

He always refers to himself and his wife and his child as "vegetarian." Yet he spends time describing the miserable deaths of day-old male chicks and understands what happens in dairy production, and I assume he doesn't partake of anyone's eggs or milk. In all fairness, most people's only reference is PETA. He never says he is.
