Birds of Costa Rica by Dyer and N. G. Howell

10,000 Birds

It was an early morning last October, 6.40 a.m. in the Casa Tangara dowii lodge as I was taking my observation position next to a glass wall, overlooking the bird feeders in the misty cloud forests of Costa Rica. My friend and host, Serge Arias, brought me a mug of a slowly, drop by drop, prepared specialty Tarrazú coffee. From my sofa, I observed the first Common Chlorospingus , Silver-throated Tanagers , Chestnut-capped , White-naped and Yellow-thighed Brushfinches , all coming to Serge’s papa

Predator animal noises in movies vs reality

Reddit Animals

I've been watching the Therizinosaurus scene from Jurassic World, and the noise made by the dinosaur made me remember other instances of predator animals/animal-like monsters in fictional media and the constant noises and roars they're usually making while hunting.I don't have much contact with the wildlife, especially the dangerous kind, but my assumption would be that they don't necessarily make constant noises, growls and rorars when hunting, which would make the prey notice t

Veterinarian salaries struggle to keep up with inflation

AVMA News

Unlike new veterinarians, overall veterinary incomes haven’t quite caught up to prerecession levels, said Charlotte McKay, AVMA associate director for statistical and geospatial analysis and senior economist. However, competition in the market for veterinarians and inflation have contributed to a rise in salaries, she said during the presentation “The Market for Veterinarians” at the AVMA Business & Economic Forum, held virtually October 24-25.

What can we do? Bird hit a window

Reddit Animals

Hey, we were on our way to the park when we saw this bird hit a window of a nearby building. It looked injured like it couldn't move it's neck. It's a pretty busy area near NYU so I waited with it and tried comfort it and make sure no bikes or dogs got to it. After a few minutes it felt comfortable to let me take it in the hand. I put it on nearby tree and noticed it seemed to be able to move it's neck again.

Found a mole in my house and died after capture

Reddit Animals

We bought flowers for the house and turns out a mole was living in soil. Captured the mole and put him in a carry container with dirt and water. Less than 1 hour mole is now dead. During and after capture acted normal and was burrowing in dirt (fresh unused Eco earth). Kind of heart broken cause I was gonna dig a hole for him outside to be free (ground frosted from snow).

I’m an emotional wreck when it comes to animals

Reddit Animals

I can’t read a story about a pet or watch a video without going down the emotional sinkhole. And every time I end up crying. It might not be a rainbow bridge incident but just some puppers/kittens fooling around their humans but I can’t go through the thing without welling up. I constantly think and repent my younger days when I was completely oblivious about my pet puppers Mittu.

Can anyone identify what’s wrong with this marmot?

Reddit Animals

Does anyone have any idea what’s wrong with it? Is it a wound or infection? It seems this marmot has been a pet for a long time so it probably didn’t get injured in the wild. The creator on YouTube dodges the questions about it. I know the sub says no injuries, but I don’t have any clue where else to ask.

My pug won’t use the bathroom with my boyfriend

So my boyfriend tries to take my lil pug out to use the bathroom, and everytime he tries, he has to walk her down the road for her to even use the bathroom. But when I take her out I don’t need to do that. It’s very inconvenient and sometimes he doesn’t have the time to do all that. Why is she refusing to use the bathroom with him? She’s all over him every other time.

Roaring Microphone: Could It Scare a Bear?

Is it even possible to achieve with small speakers nowadays? I'm curious about the potential of using sound as a deterrent for bears. Any insights or thoughts on this idea?

Lapland Adventure

10,000 Birds

By David Tomlinson If you’re an avid lister, then the best advice I can give is not to go to Lapland in late autumn, as you won’t see many birds. During a week based in Äkäslompolo, a small Finnish town a couple of hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, we struggled to get to 27 species. To be honest, it wasn’t just birds that we (birding friend Martin and my wife Jan) had come to see, as our target was the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis : the friends whose house we were staying in

Are Wolves more resistant to fleas and ticks than dogs?

Reddit Animals

Wolves get ticks just like dogs do, but they have an average lifespan od 13, 14 years in the wild, where they can catch them almost every day for most of the year. So are they more resistant or do they somehow catch them less than dogs, maybe in other parts of the body? A single tick that can be picked up in a single walk in a park can endanger a life of a dog, harm their organs, make them lose appetite and it can take many visits to the vet for them to heal, so it's mind boggling to me that
