Breeding Crested Pigeons in Broome

10,000 Birds

Crested Pigeons – Ocyphaps lophotes are very widespread throughout Australia and can easily be observed in Broome on the streetlights on a wintery morning. The Crested Pigeons enjoy cooling off under the sprinklers in the parks and gardens on hot days too. Despite this article saying that they build a delicate nest we have observed much more substantial nests here in Broome.

Question about wild ducks and how they raise ducklings

Reddit Animals

Yesterday I saw two small ducklings in a group of ducks and geese, but their mom didn’t seem to be around them or attentive. Can someone explain a bit more about duck behavior with their babies? Are ducklings generally safe with other ducks that aren’t their parents? Will ducks “babysit” or adopt ducklings that have been abandoned? Do ducks and geese have a sense of community together if they become familiar with each other?

Humane way to safely get deer to move away from road?

Reddit Animals

I was driving tonight and there were a couple deer on the edge of the road so I beeped my horn and they didn't seem phased. I was wondering if perhaps as silly as it sounds, installing a loud horn car horn that allows you to select the sound(like a Tesla) and playing a lion roar or similar has any chance of being better? My area has a lot of deer.

Behavior I would not have thought cats and dogs would exhibit

Reddit Animals

Actually, it surprised me more about cats -- dogs always seemed more attuned to humans. More than once I saw a cat that had been scared of a stranger understand that its owner or even just someone else it knew being friendly to that person meant that the cat was no longer afraid. I also was taking a walk with my neighbor's cat (he would come by and we would take walks) and we encountered a toddler who wanted to pet the cat.

Animal empathy

Reddit Animals

I was watching the movie Hush, particularly the scene in which the killer is taunting maddie with her dead friends earrings being taken off of her, and I was wondering if animal empathy could extend to the dead? For example, if you killed a bears cub, and then later stomped on it, would the mother bear care? Or would that have ended with the cubs death.

Penguins seem to spend a lot of time standing around?

Reddit Animals

Ive been looking at some penguin webcams (from zoos) and ive noticed that the penguins seem to spend most of their time just standing around or lying down. Check out the edinburgh zoo penguin cam if you want to see what i mean. They almost never move around their enclosure. Is that normal? The penguins in another zoo webcam that ive seen seem to move around a lot more, but they are the exception, not the rule.

found 3 baby field mice and need advice

Reddit Animals

so today, me and my brother were removing a pile of fire wood that has been there for years. sure enough, there was tons of bugs in it. but at some point i came back and saw 2 large mice run into the pile, and then my dog sniffed out a baby. (she didnt eat it thankfully) the parents were nowhere to be found so we put it off to the side under some bark where it would hopefully be picken up by its mother. at this point we had to stop so we didnt touch the logs until about an hour and a half later.

"Exploring the Intersection of Personal Beliefs and Veganism: Understanding the Ethical Treatment of Animals"

Reddit Animals

If you are wondering whether veganism aligns with your personal beliefs, consider the following question: Do you think that it is acceptable to inflict harm and take the lives of animals for reasons that are not necessary? If your answer is affirmative, it may indicate a lack of empathy or callous disregard for the well-being of others, which are traits associated with psychopathy.

A True Mouse Anecdote -- does anyone have a similar story?

Reddit Animals

Several years ago, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. A gray blur which moved so rapidly I was not at first sure I had seen it but it repeated and I was pretty sure I had a mouse. I read that if you scale up a mouse to human size and you look at body-lengths per second, they are moving at 152.6 mph (not sure why so precise since they vary in size and speed).
