A Corn Crake in New York State!

10,000 Birds

No one expected a Corn Crake. But, then, no one expected a Common Greenshanks in New Jersey. And, the message on the NYSbirds listserv this morning was clear: A Corn Crake (this is no joke) is currently feeding on the north shoulder of the Ocean Parkway east of the Cedar Beach marina … Ken & Sue Feustel. Now, probably if I was Corey, my response would be to grab my car keys, bins, and camera and go go go.

The great green Caribbean lowlands – Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Sitting on a beach under a coconut tree (but not under the very crown, I know that), I am contemplating birding and the meaning of life… Salty breeze comes from the Caribbean, way saltier than any Mediterranean sea breeze. Watching my first Brown Pelicans , I am inhaling deeply and commenting to Sergio Arias how strong the scent is. He answers: “Maybe the ganja those guys are smoking makes it that strong.”.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of November 2017?

10,000 Birds

We here in Rochester are expecting our first freezing day this weekend, which is to say a day that does not rise above the freezing mark. If you’re like me, the onset of winter drives you indoors for months. But giving in to warm, dry comforts of home would be a mistake now, as the birds of winter (or summer on the southern side of the world) begin filtering through.

A lesson on Banding

10,000 Birds

Like all of the esteemed writers and loyal followers of this site, I spend nearly every available moment out in the field birding. We all have our reasons, whatever they may be, that drives us in our pursuit of these avian beauties. For me, it is now, and always has been about the photography. This lifelong interest ( obsession if you were to ask my wife) has not only allowed me to travel, become much better educated and make hundreds, if not more, friends all around the globe.

I’ll Find My Own Godwit, Thanks.

10,000 Birds

I had all morning this past Saturday to look for birds. I really didn’t have anything in particular I wanted to see but I was sorely tempted to head out to Heckscher Park in Suffolk County to check out the trio of Hudsonian Godwits that had been seen there regularly for a couple of days. But I’ve really become averse to chasing birds for the sake of chasing them (unless they are a lifer or a state bird) so I decided to stick to my home borough of Queens and see what I could find for

Tennant Creek Poo Ponds

10,000 Birds

In Australia in the north of the country where the land is dry and there is very little water for much of the year one of the best places to find birds is at the town “Poo Ponds”, which is officially called the Waste Water Treatment Plant. It is rarely sign posted as a tourist attraction, so we generally refer to Google Earth to look for large fresh water ponds close to the edge of town.

Draai Laag Brewing Company: Haviken

10,000 Birds

There’s not always any rhyme or reason to the appearances birds make on beer labels, which makes finding the unexpected ones almost as exciting – for me, at least – as any birding tick. This week’s beer – and its improbable avian mascot – is Haviken, a Belgian-inspired dark ale from Draai Laag Brewing Company of Pittsburgh. As far as I can tell from toggling back and forth between the English and Dutch language versions of Wikipedia’s article on Accipiter gentilis , “havik” is the Dutch name for

The Crossley ID Guide: Waterfowl–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

There is no mistaking a Crossley ID Guide. Larger, denser with avian information than your typical field guide, a Crossley Guide bursts with bird images, photographic plates that verge on the surreal of birds in all plumages and poses against real-life habitats, informing, sometimes overwhelming us with visual and, if you can take your eyes off the images, textual information.
