Artificial intelligence in veterinary medicine: What are the ethical and legal implications?

AVMA News

AVMA Axon recently debuted the webinar "Do No Harm: Ethical and Legal Implications of A.I." by Dr. Dr. Eli Cohen, a clinical professor of diagnostic imaging at the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. He explains the differences between the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) in veterinary medicine and human medicine, the concept of AI use risk classification, and how to foster the ethical deployment of AI in veterinary medicine.

10,000 Birds

Well – as long as you do not ask for pay, that is! I am looking for additional writers who are interested in contributing posts covering our usual range of topics – birds, birding trips, reviews of bird books, bird photography, and so on. While ideally, you would be willing to write regularly (i.e., weekly or biweekly), I will also be happy to accept one-off guest posts.

Since the Maui wildfires in early August burned large areas of the island, including the city of Lahaina, donations have poured in from around the world. That includes the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), which has given a $20,000 grant to the Maui Humane Society, a $10,000 grant to Greater Good Charities, and an $19,000 estate gift to the Hawaii VMA so that the organizations can help recover and treat animals in need.

Theory: Bears are deeply affected by separating from their mothers

Reddit Animals

My theory is that the transition from a close relationship with their moms to be suddenly chased off makes bears angry and they have resentment. Note how friendly bear cubs are to humans vs adult bears. Unless adults were raised from cub to adult by humans. I am sure there are counter examples, but the separation I believe accounts for the aggression in adult bears.

Winter Prep with Reptiles

Reddit Animals

So I’m trying to prep for cold weather, and being in a more Northern state we expect snow and power outages. I’m looking for some recommendations for alternative heating sources in the case of a power outage, and I know propane is always an option but I recently moved to a mobile home and I’m anxious about using it due to the fire hazard. I’ve gotta find something that can keep it at least 75F room temp.

My dog who never cuddles or even likes being too close to me just sat on my lap and let me hug her

Reddit Animals

So I have a golden retriever 4 years old and she’s very much not affectionate. She will walk away from me when I try to hug her. She lets me pet her but not for long before she walks off somewhere. Even when I cry she will sigh and walk off. About 20 minutes ago I just went through a pretty messy and emotional mess of a breakup. I was absolutely bawling.

Please help me!

Reddit Animals

I'm a senior in high school and am taking an AP Research class. I'm set on working with animals, as I'm not interested in anything else. At first my plan was to do research on invasive vs. native species in a controlled environment, but the difficulty factor made me reconsider. It would be ideal if I were able to work with rats or some other similarly intelligent animal, but when I brought it up to my dad he shut it down.

Why do swans keep knocking on my patio door?

Reddit Animals

I live next to a pond which has 2 swans, and the swans come out of the pond, walk onto my garden, and knock on the glass patio door using their beaks until I open it. I thought they could be hungry so I tried feeding them (bread, oats, wheat) but they don’t seem interested in the food, and usually leave it untouched on the floor. Could they just be bored / want some attention?

I’m a midwesterner from the US (Indiana). Sitting by my open window at 3am and I just heard an unfamiliar animal sound. It sounds like a whistle or whinnie (trill intonation) it’s not a screech owl, nor is it a horse. Could it be deer? I’m at a loss.

Flea Issue

Reddit Animals

Hi y'all, my mom is currently experiencing a flea issue with her six dogs. We've never had this issue before in the past, so we're looking into ways to deal with it. My area is to treat the yard. I've done some research and read somewhere that nematodes eat fleas, and can be added to a yard in order to deal with any potential issues there.

Lesser Antillean Specialties

Originally, I was going to highlight one of the species endemic to the islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean; but once I typed in “Lesser Antillean”, six species popped up. Just as almost all my decisions are made, I asked myself “why not” – and here we are. This is not about every endemic found in the region but only those carrying the regional designation.

Hawks At A Distance: A Timely Classic

10,000 Birds

It’s hawk migration time again in North America, time to once again school ourselves in the art of identifying distant silhouettes and remembering the difference between a glide and a soar and a glide-wing flap-glide. My book of choice for this time of year is Jerry Liguori’s Hawks At A Distance: Identification of Migrant Raptors, a brilliant tutorial on how to recognize raptors by shape and flight style, distilling years of experience and expertise into 216 pages.
