Birding Balkans: A Play in Two Acts

10,000 Birds

ACT I. SCENE I. Iron Gates (Djerdap) national park, Serbia. Small canyon among wooded hills. Morning. Framed by red Permian sandstone, Eric Hyman is staring into the bare branches of a dead tree, or, to be more precise, into some fluttering t**s. Although the sun has risen, the cliffs around us are still deeply shadowed. The entire geological history of the region, from Palaeozoic to Cenozoic, is written in these exposed rock faces of the Boljetin Canyon.

This Week in Bird News: Hawaiian Edition

10,000 Birds

In the popular imagination, Hawaii is a tropical paradise. (No, not a magical place— you’re thinking of Tahiti, Agent Coulson.) But it’s not always so wonderful for native flora and fauna. Hurricane Newton, The aftermath

10,000 Birds

In the wee hours of last Monday night, Category 1 hurricane came rolling up the Baja. Striking Cabo San Lucas, then La Paz, before continuing all the way up the Sea of Cortez and thru San Carlos. Here in La Paz, we saw a peak of 85 MPH, with 5-6 inches of rain. My “real job” has me out in the storm all night, and through out the evening, I could not help but wonder what happens to the birds when one of these wind events hit?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of September 2016)

10,000 Birds

Every year around this very weekend, new birds return from a far-too-long hiatus. No matter how many months they’ve been away, their presence triggers tremendous excitement, inspiring rapt attention from coast to coast. That’s right… football season has finally begun. Go Cardinals, Ravens, Falcons, Eagles, and Seahawks! Early fall in Western New York seems to be a fortuitous time to find Northern Mockingbirds , as I observed many more than usual this weekend.

Paperbark Flycatcher

10,000 Birds

In the Kimberley area of Australia we have a smaller sub species of the Restless Flycatcher known as the Paperbark Flycatcher. Our local Paperbark Flycatcher hovers over our small pond and visits our garden throughout the year and always announces its arrival into the garden. The Paperbark Flycatcher makes a scissor grinding sound which clearly distinguishes it from the chickety chick sound of our local Willie Wagtail.
