Birds of Prey of the East & Birds of Prey of the West: Review of Two Field Guides

10,000 Birds

There are 35 raptor species that have a presence in the United States and Canada, 56 (more or less) if you count by subspecies, and they are all covered in admirable, exhausting, unbelievable detail in B irds of Prey of the East: A Field Guide and Birds of Prey of the West: A Field Guide by Brian K. Wheeler. These guides are sequels, updates, and complements to Wheeler’s previous classic books, Raptors of Eastern North America and Raptors of Western North America (PUP, 2003), now out-of-print an

It’s Migration Time!

10,000 Birds

In the past few weeks I have had several fall migrants passing through my area. The temperatures in northern California have been in the high 90’s to 104 degrees so having the only water hole in half a mile probably helps attract birds to my water feature. Click on photos for full sized images. Of course I was excited when I walked onto the back porch the other day and saw a stealth, fast moving, black and white bird sneaking around in the oak trees.

Week 29: The birds of Crater Lake National Park

10,000 Birds

The first part of this week finds us in south central Oregon, at one of the nation’s true gems, Crater Lake National park. I came here looking for some of the birds that tend to live in the higher altitudes, but found myself, again mesmerized by this incredible, scenic wonder. With all the forest fires going on in the area, again this year, we were quite concerned if we would even be able to see, but Mother Nature provided us with a very nice northerly breeze, and blew all the smoke out of the a

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of September 2018?

10,000 Birds

We’re in the shoulder season now, perfectly poised to enjoy the fruits of the passing season and the one that lies ahead. Whatever the wind blows your way this weekend, be ready! I’m headed down to the Chincoteague area for my annual pilgrimage, hoping to find a bevy of birds that have eluded me so far this year. Corey has the entire New York Atlantic coast to scour, which means he’ll be busy this weekend.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of September 2018)

10,000 Birds

This first weekend of September is still in motion for many of us, which makes our review of best birds slightly premature. Keep in mind, though, that birders bird always, not just on Saturday and Sunday. Feel free to wait until day’s end to post your best, or just keep doing your thing regardless of the day of the week. I enjoyed seeing American Goldfinches scour the last shards of seed from my coneflowers, which I’ve delayed cutting back until the birds seemed satisfied.

How Many Bird Species on Poas Volcano, Costa Rica?

10,000 Birds

Flying in to Costa Rica is accompanied by porthole views of the Central Valley and the mountains that flank it. Curvy roads twist their way through a broken quilt of coffee, wind breaks, and forested riparian zones. Where the land rises to the north, the plane might fly over a mountain with a dark green top punctuated by a lighter green lagoon in a rocky landscape.

Birding Arizona–style

10,000 Birds

Coronado National Forest. Santa Rita Mountains. Madera Canyon. Pre-Internet, I got all my birding info from print magazines; and WildBird was my go-to back in the day. One particular issue had a feature on the birds of Madera Canyon, Arizona. They claimed 15 species of bejeweled hummingbirds, 36 wood warblers, a Flame-colored Tanager , Greater Roadrunners (straight from the cartoon), and an oddly perched, metallic green-headed fellow called the ‘elusive’ Elegant Trogon.

Birding the Dampier Downs Road

10,000 Birds

We have made a couple of trips down the sandy Dampier Downs Road now the native plants have started to flower prolifically in the desert country near Broome. It is always interesting to see the changes in the native vegetation over the winter months when there is no rain at all. Deriving down this sandy track is always rewarding and on no occasion have we come across any other vehicles.

Collaborative list – August 2018

10,000 Birds

Is it wrong of me to go birding to get away from the kids now that they are at home all day? August is the make or break month for relationships. Can the whole family live together in harmony during the school holidays? Bravo if you have. Happy birding if you suddenly find yourself single. This month has been a slow one with just 73 lists shared, but far more happy smiling kids on social media, so I guess it all comes out good in the end. 458 birds were seen by 7 beats in 8 countries.
