Federal Public Lands: Pacific Seabirds

10,000 Birds

Controversies about federal public lands, including the 2016 occupation of Malheur NWR in Oregon and proposed bills in Congress to dispose of certain land, has focused attention on the value of federal lands to birds and birders. Because these lands include a variety of different habitats and range from Alaska to Puerto Rico and Hawaii to Maine, it is difficult to make generalizations about their impact on birds.

European Goldfinch in Socrates Sculpture Park

10,000 Birds

When I was a kid, and couldn’t travel, I thought patch birding sounded dreadfully boring. Now that I can travel, I have perversely discovered the charms of really working over one spot of habitat across the seasons and the years; as such I’m on a mission to find 100 species of bird in Socrates Sculpture Park, a bit of Queens between the East River and Vernon Boulevard where artists create open-air displays.

Limited Access Birding

10,000 Birds

Let start this off by saying that I am not looking for sympathy, well, Ok, maybe a little bit. You see I am sitting here typing this with one functioning finger on my right hand. This is because I have torn the ligaments in my right, and I might add, very dominate wrist. This has required the application of a cast, from the middle of my bicep, to the middle of my hand.

The Narrow-lined Puffer

10,000 Birds

This is a bird blog, and my beat is New Zealand, so let me talk about a fish I saw in Australia. My recent trip was fantastic, and really re-kindled my love of diving, so much so that I’ve started planning and saving for a diving (and birding) trip to Costa Rica in 2019. I was able to rent a camera for some of my dives and so will be boring you with some underwater scenes and creatures over the coming weeks (and, I suppose, some birds too).

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of May 2017)

10,000 Birds

You know what they say: A cold, wet May, A barn full of hay. I didn’t hear that farmer wisdom much while growing up in the Bronx, but this rainy, wintry start to the month of migration has us all reaching for whatever scant comfort we can find. I still don’t have a barn… This preposterous weather has me feeling bad for the local birds, so we’re keeping our feeder well stocked and enjoying the traffic.

Panama Trip Report: April 2017

10,000 Birds

Can a family-focused trip—even to one of the world’s most biodiverse countries—deliver enough opportunities for avian observation to satisfy this serious world birder? If you have kids, you’re probably as curious as I was. The short answer, I’m happy to report, is a resounding yes. With enough planning, you can enjoy a family-friendly, bird-rich vacation in the Panama Canal zone.

Birding in the rain

10,000 Birds

Are you stubborn enough to go out on Sunday morning even if it’s raining? Some of us are. In May, morning bird lists here reach 40 to 50 and day lists reach 60+, even 70+, yet, this morning I am happy with a mere 11 species. I was hoping for some wind, which would allow me to open the leeward window and listen to the birds singing in the reeds, or should I say singing in the rain, but the rain was falling literally vertically and, with a cup of espresso from the nearest petrol station, I was bir

Lake Nallan

10,000 Birds

On a recent birding and camping trip we found ourselves on the road in between Cue and Meekatharra in Western Australia’s mid west region. Last year the area had had no significant rainfall and so a brief stop at Lake Nallan was not worth a mention, because it was completely dry. This year there was water in Lake Nallan when we arrived late in the afternoon and as a result of that we decided to camp overnight.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of May 2017?

10,000 Birds

The second weekend of May is a very special time, where we all come together with loved ones to celebrate what really matters. That’s right, May 13 is Global Big Day , so be sure to get out there and record some birds! ( Did you think I was going to mention some other holiday? ). I’ll be chasing wood warblers close to home here in Rochester, especially since our traditional migrant traps are flooded out.
