USDA starts highly pathogenic avian influenza vaccine trials

In April, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) began testing the efficacy of four vaccines against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Initial data from the single-dose trials are expected to be available this May, followed by results from the two-dose studies in June.

Birding Shanghai in April 2023

If I had to define spring from a Shanghai birder’s perspective, I would have to say that for me, it begins on the day I see my first colorful flycatcher – like this male Narcissus Flycatcher. So, for me, spring began on April 16. I only saw the Yellow-rumped Flycatcher two days later, so it did not quite make it into the “First colorful flycatcher of the spring” honor role.

Why were these two smaller lizards seemingly latched onto a larger, dead one?

So I was walking home from the bus stop today when I came across a weird sight in my neighbor's driveway. Sitting on the ground were 3 brown lizards. I don't know the species, but they were small, and for context, I live in Los Angeles to give an idea of the different species here. There was one big one, and two smaller ones. The larger one lay on the ground on its stomach- while one was on its side, and the other lay on top of the body of the larger one on the other side.
