My dog got pregnant outside of heat?!

Reddit Animals

My dog's heat cycle started on 3rd January. Today, 6th April, she got spayed. The vet is telling me he had to perform an abortion because she was around 2 weeks pregnant?! I am so confused. Am also confused about how this could have happened. She did meet a male dog on 17th March and while he did try to hump her from time to time, mating did not take place.
