As part of Governor Roy Cooper’s North Carolina Opioid Action Plan, a new law will require the state’s veterinarians to report the use of gabapentin even though it is not a controlled substance. HB 190 goes into effect March 1, 2024, for pharmacies and March 1, 2025, for veterinarians.

Sunbirds are basically hummingbirds without any danger of Trumpism or MAGA ideology. And they think in meters and kilograms rather than in weird non-matching units such as feet and pounds. Apparently, convergent evolution has spared them from taking up these more unpleasant aspects of hummingbirds. So, not much that is not to like about hummingbirds, particularly as they also frequently perch (unlike hummingbirds), which makes the life of the bird photographer so much easier.

So I didn't see how it happened but I just heard my beagle do this whine when they're really close to a target. When I checked, there's a sparrow in the ground. He's still breathing and looks alive. But I'm sure he hurt his wing. So I probably have a few hours, can't bring him to a vet since most our vets wouldn't bat an eyelash to the creature.
