Over the long weekend I was in Bruce Peninsula national park (Southern Ontario, Canada) with my partner. There are black bears in the back country but sightings are apparently really rare, which is good, because I'm quite afraid of bears. I take the proper precautions to make sure I don't disturb them. We were five minutes into our hike back when I heard a loud, thundering running noise from the brush next to us.

How much do you know about owls? This isn’t a rhetorical question, think about it. I’ve been fortunate to encounter many owls in my birding life, sometimes because I’m looking for them, sometimes happily by happenstance. I’ve observed nesting owls, fledgling owlets, owls eating small rodents, owls coughing up their pellets, a Great Horned Owl silently flying over me, a Great Gray Owl sitting regally still on a post as a boy walks up to him, a pair of Barking Owls duetting
