Apparently, soloensis stands for “Discovered in or native to the Solo River valley” (Wikipedia; the Solo river is a river in Indonesia). The Chinese name for Osprey is fish eagle – appropriate given that apart from spaghetti and pineapples, the diet of ospreys consists mostly of fish.

The Pelican is not a New Zealand Bird

Dipping for fish An extinct endemic form of pelican in New Zealand would have represented another family lost, like the odd form of owlet-nightjar and New Zealand’s lost members of the hawk and eagle family. But it seems the story wasn’t so clear cut. And the fossils themselves were vanishingly rare. And, sometimes, New Zealand.

We follow the tire tracks in an off-white, salty soil and then, without a word of warning, our guide/driver turns into the bushes, driving left and right… until one and then another Short-eared Owl flushes in front of us. Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus. The area is overgrown with low, thorny bushes.

Layover in Singapore

Let’s take Singapore’s Changi International Airport as an example; it is a huge hub airport with large numbers of people passing through in transit to Australia, Indonesia and south-east Asia. There is always the chance of an over-flying raptor with Brahminy Kite and White-bellied Sea-eagle commonly seen. Spotted Wood-owl.

Phillipps’ Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo: A Book Review

Borneo is the third largest island in the world; politically it is divided amongst three countries–Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Indonesia (Kalimantan) and the sultanate of Brunei. I’m already looking up birding tours of Borneo and pricing airfares. Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree.
