The area is used as a hunting ground for large raptors including the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Brahminy Kite. Our observations recently have shown that the adult Pied Oystercatchers are roosting amongst the shorebirds where possible and it may well protect the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers.

This means that they probably can’t withstand any sort of hunting pressure, and given the lack of Great Curassows in most accessible parts of their range, that is probably the case. After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. Looking miserable with its feathers soaked, one yellow and blue European Bee-eater sits on a dead branch.

The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates. The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner.

The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. The Latin name “ chinensis ” is somewhat misleading as is much more common in Southeast Asia than in China – apparently, it was chosen in the mistaken belief that the type specimen had come from China. In 2010, a joint expedition by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and the Sudanese Wildlife Society (SWS) found a further 17 electrocuted Egyptian Vultures. Neighbouring (FYRO) Macedonia nowadays has about 20 pairs, while two decades ago they had 135! Reasons for this situation are numerous.

It’s the boar hunting season. By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! Scattered Pied Avocets , Spotted Redshanks in good numbers, cows and water buffaloes grazing, two Black Storks , bare mudbar and… a perched eagle! Enough of the mountains.

Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish. Saddle-bills are more strictly restricted to wetland environments where they are adept at catching their own fish with their enormous upturned bills.

The view from Sayer Road used to be very open and offered little protection many years ago and we contributed to the planting of small native trees in 1998 when we lived in Palmerston. There was a lot of disturbance, with almost everything taking flight, as a pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles soared over the lagoon on dusk.

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears.
