Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle?

Some farming activity in the area meant that there had been some manner of clearing created. A massive shadow caught our eye on the opposite end, by the time we whispered “ Black Hawk-Eagle ” to each other it already was in view almost overhead. Definitely a hawk-eagle, but which? Sharing our thoughts at Facebook and looking for a place to go now, without a prior plan and early start, the four of us ended up at the nearby Veliko Blato fish farm, swallowed by the city’s recent spread. Surrounded by farm land but with a reasonable well vegetated creek running through, the town looked pretty limited in terms of birding potential. A huge Wedge-tailed Eagle soared high overhead on thermals suggesting that the morning was beginning to wane and our drinks were waiting.

Akin to sewage farms, garbage dumps, and other weird places where we go birding, the places where banana farms dump rotting fruit and other organic waste can attract vagrant wood-warblers and other small insectivores. Naturally rare in intact forest, these monster eagles are far more difficult after the forest shrinks into patches.

To complete the scene the African Fish Eagle ( Haliaeetus vocifer ) was circling above us, yelping a triumphant high-pitched ‘Kyowkow- kow!’. ‘By The lady living on a farm by the Gaborone Dam said ‘I saw a croc taking an egret.’. The gentleman living on a farm by the Ngotwane Dam said ‘A croc took my dog, right there!’.

When discussing this topic for local media, I often say that because of their White-tailed Eagles , the Scottish island of Mull makes 2 million pounds per year from birders alone. By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once.

The Bellymac Farm turned out to be the location that the birds choose to gather in. After the owners contacted the Royal Socieity for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), looking for an explanation as to where the heck all these birds came from, it was determined that the farm would be used as a feeding station.

Just look for the biggest, darkest green spot and that’s the farm, the last sizeable remnant of intact rainforest in the area. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here. Geese from the inside of the submerged, horseshoe shaped island take flight, flushed by one young White-tailed Eagle. In this light, all beaks are dark!

I have to agree with her, as every time I chance upon an owl, be it something as common as a Great Horned Owl, or something extremely special like Australia’s Powerful Owl , or the Verreaux’s Eagle-owl from South Africa, I get a huge feeling of accomplishment. There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. Pygmy Cormorants are regular, occasionally a White-tailed Eagle and during cold spells, Goosanders. From late April, carry an insect repellent with you.

Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle! The Bald Eagle was flying upside-down with talons up trying to ward off the small white falcon!
