I think it’s time to hunt Sandhill Cranes. And while we’re at it, I think it’s time to open a limited season on Bald Eagles. young per year.

On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure! Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. We will travel on to the great Thar Desert, a place of immense beauty and peace.

In the grass, Desert and Isabelline Wheatears await us, together with Tawny Pipits and large flocks of Greater Short-toed Larks ; while Booted Eagle , Lesser Kestrel and even one Critically Endangered White-rumped Vulture fly above us.

Many countries have private reserves and concessions, run for tourism or hunting, that provide outstanding wildlife watching opportunities. Brown-hooded Kingfishers hunt far from water. Spotted Eagle Owls are one of several owls that can be seen here. As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs.

A birder needs access to large areas of mature forest that also offer up chances at seeing glittering flocks of tanagers, checking out the tail bobbing behavior of cool antbirds, and glassing a hawk-eagle or two. In Costa Rica, the growing local birding community likewise have their lists of most wanted species, both local and global. Bald Eagle. Cedar Waxwing. A quetzal?
