You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. Many visitors appear to do the short walks, so you can enjoy the area mostly alone other than the wildlife. Lara is about 20 kilometres from Geelong or 60 kilometres south-west of Melbourne.

The Poo Ponds were very productive and the wildlife was making the most of the water available and the shade provided by the excavating equipment. Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. There were 6 Royal Spoonbills and numerous Hardhead and Pacific Black Ducks.
