Not so with our visit to Bosque de Apache NWR in southern New Mexico. This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. The second half of the week was spent near the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. US species – 243.

In June, the 2018-2019 Federal Duck Stamp was released. Birders have been encouraged by the American Birding Association and others to buy Federal Duck Stamps. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has published a list of NWRs that have been created or expanded with Duck Stamp funds. Senators, and two U.S. Representatives.

The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter. Marks National Wildlife refuge in search of water birds – ducks and mergansers in particular. 2020 was that year for me! I arrived at St. I love Snow Geese.

This lake, with a surface area of up to 150 square miles in good years, is my go-to site for dozens of waterfowl and shorebird species, so I take its health personally. It is also a vital wintering and migratory site for most of these species, so I imagine they take its health very personally, as well.
