In June, the 2018-2019 Federal Duck Stamp was released. Birders have been encouraged by the American Birding Association and others to buy Federal Duck Stamps. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has published a list of NWRs that have been created or expanded with Duck Stamp funds. But initially, some background is helpful. # # #.

Activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping are categorized as “consumptive” uses. In contrast, consumptive uses were minor: fishing accounted for 10 percent and hunting was just 4 percent. Of course, birders interested in contributing more concretely to the National Wildlife Refuge System should buy a Duck Stamp every year.

Among them are Federal Duck Stamps and related waterfowl conservation programs. A “ Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp ,” costs $25 and income from sales goes into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund (“MBCF”). Duck Stamps and import duty contributions were similar, at about $34-38 million each.

Last week I wrote about the interesting hunting habits of our local Harris’s Hawks. Today I will cover another one of Mexico’s Baja Peninsulas characters, the Zone-tailed Hawk Buteo Albonotatus. Mexico’s baja Peninsula has a strong resident population, and they can be found sporadically thru out main land Mexico.

After our brief trip thru the great state of Texas, we were headed back into New Mexico, a state I was quite excited to explore. I have been all around the western states, here and there, but never spent any time in New Mexico. Our next stop was another mutually agreed upon stop, Albuquerque New Mexico.
