Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. We had no idea if the nighthawks would hunker down or flee. Arriving before sunrise, we could already see the thick clouds on the horizon. Such is birding, such is life.

I can hear the mooing of cows, interrupted by gunshots, while two scared flocks of ducks fly above the delta. In a low tree crown above the road stands an Icterine Warbler , while a smaller flock of Sand Martins hunts insects low above the reeds. High ’tsi-tsi-tsi’ and one turquoise Common Kingfisher flies by.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season.

The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. On top of being illegal to capture and sell birds in the country, it is also immoral. The illegal bird trade kills thousands of birds each year just in the manner they are smuggled. In some parts of the country it is already illegal to have slingshots.

And if you have a small kid and are in the vicinity of some ducks and geese? The behavior could be especially disastrous for waterfowl, which are hunted by people, but less so for passerines, or perching birds, which regularly come into people’s bird feeders. Do you toss the bird your leftovers? Do you feed the birds then?

BBC Nature has a really cool video of the Peregrine hunting a pigeon in a stoop. Although Peregrines are famous for hunting birds from above by stooping down on them, they use several other means of attaining prey and are most active at dawn and dusk. Don’t miss it!
