Little Big Year – Week 36: Southern New Mexico hotspots.

Not so with our visit to Bosque de Apache NWR in southern New Mexico. This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Here is my first ever group of Gamble’s Quail , hanging around a huge feeder block. Here is one of the Western Grebes.

Snow Geese in Florida

The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter. Marks National Wildlife refuge in search of water birds – ducks and mergansers in particular. 2020 was that year for me! I arrived at St. I love Snow Geese.

Trinidad Colorado is located just a few miles north of the Colorado – New Mexico border, and home to the Trinidad Reservoir. In the past, seeing some of these Ring-necked Ducks would have been rather scarce, so here is a shot of the small group that were on the larger pond. Next week we will spend some time in New Mexico.

My eBird 10th Anniversary

Birding trips to Florida , New Mexico , and Texas are obvious too. For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California. After our brief trip thru the great state of Texas, we were headed back into New Mexico, a state I was quite excited to explore. I have been all around the western states, here and there, but never spent any time in New Mexico. Our next stop was another mutually agreed upon stop, Albuquerque New Mexico.
