We were driving up to northwestern Michigan from our homes in Ohio (me) and West ByGod Virginia (Geoff) in search of a bird species that would be a lifer for both of us: the Bohemian Waxwing. It is an excellent place to find a huge variety of ducks and many of these ducks we would not see in Broome during the year, so a real incentive to spend as much time as possible walking and birding around the lake. There were also plentiful numbers of Pink-eared Ducks , Grey Teal, Pacific Black Ducks and Hardheads.

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month.
